Geography and Government

Geography: Situated to the north of the U.S., between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, Canada is the second largest country in the world. Ottawa, in the province of Ontario, is the capital city. Canada has 9,970,000 sq. kms, with 7700 kms from East to West and 4600 from North to South. Almost 90% of its population live near the U.S. border. Most of its surface is water and its forests are impressive. The prairies cover Manitoba, Saskatchewan and parts of Alberta. This is a very fertil ground, with wheat being one of the most important agricultural products. The West is known by its Rocky Mountains, while the East has the largest cities in the country, as well as its most famous characteristic: Niagara Falls. In the north, and old rocky plateau was formed over 2.5 billion years ago. The arctic, in the far north, is a frozen tundra.

Goverment: Canada has 10 provinces and 3 territories. It is a constitutional monarchy and a federal democratic state. Its parliament in Ottawa consists of 2 Chambers: The Commons and the Senate . On average, members of parliament are elected every 4 years.Canada is a federation, so canadians elect 2 levels of government: Federal and Provincial as well as municipal. Canada's 2 official languages are English and French. Most francophones live in the province of Quebec. Canada has a population of approximately 31 million people with 44% coming from british descent, 25% french, 4% chinese and 1% indian. In terms of immigration, Canada accepts more immigrants than any country in the world. Once in Canada, immigrants are protected by the Constitution. Under the multiculturalism policy, people from different ethnic background can live together in harmony and no discrimination. Canada permits the dual citizenship.
